While the world’s agrifood systems undergo threats of desertification and land devastation, India is among those that suffer the most. Reports indicate that 32% of India's land has already been degraded, and an additional 25% is undergoing desertification, rendering more than half of India’s diverse and massive terrain useless for agricultural practices and generating food shortages.
However, the people and the government of India are drawing up plans and taking action. Initiatives like Cooperative Forestry have seen success in transforming barren lands into fertile ones through forestation. Various rewilding efforts also show promise in giving back to the land from which we have taken.
In light of this World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, let us find ways to appreciate every drop of water we are privileged to have.
