Mangroves are one of the world’s best nature-based solutions. Mangroves have a unique capacity to capture and sequester carbon, while protecting shorelines from storm damage and erosion. The rich, muddy soil in which mangroves thrive is abundant in carbon, and over time, these trees augment this soil reservoir and secure it, along with the carbon content.

Mangrove canopies store four times more carbon than other tropical forests, underscoring the immense value of these coastal ecosystems.

July 26th is World Mangrove Day and The Climate Tribe joins UNESCO and all its members in celebrating the conservation of mangrove forests.

This award-winning photograph was shortlisted in the Solutions Category of the COP28 Photography Competition, a collaboration between The Climate Tribe and the Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Rashid al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA). The Climate Tribe has partnered with HIPA to leverage the power of photography to inspire global awareness of sustainability and advance climate action.
