Earthrise 2023: Home Planet
Astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi spent six months on the International Space Station in 2023. These images from space offer us a unique perspective of the planet we call home.
In 1968, the astronauts of the Apollo 8 mission shared the first colour picture of our planet Earth as it rose behind the moon. This picture became known as Earthrise, offering humanity a new perspective of our planet. While the image invited all humans to contemplate our place in the cosmos, it also catalysed our modern environmental movement.
Now, 55 years later, Emirati astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi spent six months on the International Space Station as part of Nasa’s SpaceX Crew-6 conducting advanced research experiments. An accomplished photographer, Astronaut Al Neyadi also documented his time in space, sharing spectacular photos and videos from his unique vantage point orbiting the earth.
Many of us leave our homes, but few of us leave the planet. Astronaut Al Neyadi’s remarkable pictures inspired The Climate Tribe to reflect on the idea of home, the planet earth and our place in the cosmos. We invite you to do the same.
